derailment in Illinois
Author: NS9850

Fox news just broadcast a breaking news story on a derailment in Illinois. If they have their facts straight, and that's a big if this early, it appears to be a collision between two trains and a fire.

Still early. Only reporting a derailment. I assume more details to come.

Now reporting eight cars of CN on the ground and the video on the Chicago Tribune stry above now shows a very large fire.

Location (Spalding) suggests that the derailment occurred on the former EJ&E, fouling the Metra line. I guess we should get some sort of overhead view with daybreak.

Media now reporting eighteen cars. An earlier NBC report that the incident was a collision has been changed to
omit such mention.

Media now reports 22 cars derailed, 3 had caught fire. No hazardous chemicals burned, just some fiberboard.

Good thing the old Spaulding depot was no longer in use. It would have been buried by the derailment or burned by the fire. It was at the NW corner of the diamond. The old tower (now at the Illinois Railway Museum) was located at the SE corner of that diamond.

Inside sources point to a broken rail as the cause.
