Hmmmmm. Time to plan a trip west to shoot the Marblehead local. That pairing would look GREAT along the Dolomite spur against the Stansbury Mountains, eh?

Maybe bland in the 1980's, but exotic now in the otherwise wide-cab world.

Haven't noticed any of these in our neighborhood (Oregon) yet. Where are they hiding them?

What does the N in SD40N denote? Is this a simple rebuild-in-kind or has any new components or technology been added?

I believe the "N" is for the shops at North Little Rock, Arkansas where they were rebuilt.

ID on the side of the cab reads SD40-2 with no "N".

Yes, just your ordinary rebuild-in-kind with new components; but no upgrades besides Smartstart system. The "N" appears in the UP computer system, but no sure what it stands for. Don't think it is for NLR as that is there only rebuild shop and nothing else coming out of there is getting the "N".

They are getting an upgrade to the diesel engine to allow it to meet Tier 0+ emissions standards, Plus the overhaul is more thorough than would be typical on a locomotive of this age.
