Thank you very much for this list. I sure needed it last week when I was shooting the Laredo line north and south of Victoria, Texas. One of the trains I shot was a southbound unit ballast train with the symbol of U-SHRV. What's the "RV?"

RV stands for Reserve, LA. It's located just west of New Orleans.

Thanks, but how would a southbound ballast train I shot in Victoria, Texas, en route to the Tex Mex have a destination symbol in Louisiana? There must be an error somewhere.

Not sure. I think BNSF and UP have a handful of orgin/destination codes that are the same as others on their systems. This may be the case with the ballast train you saw. Reserve is the only "RV" code on KCS that I know of.

You might join this Yahoo group KCSNOTES. And post your data there. A lot of good sources on this group.

MQRKC is a freight from Mexico to KC. Mainly CP/ICE traffic goingto the CP in KC.

I already have. That group has been very helpful. I posted the symbols here on TO to see if I can get any more feedback from those who aren't members of KCSNOTES. Even though KCS is a Class 1, it's somewhat elusive because of its smaller size. Info about its operations are a bit harder to come by than the larger Class 1's.

Thank You, Now I can try to learn which train is which. When KCS trains come through Houston, TX, on UP's Glidden Sub sometimes they have all kinds of freight in those manifest trains, (Grain, Auto, Intermodal) you have to scratch your head sometimes. Sometimes there are so many KCS Trains on UP's Glidden Sub between West JCT (Houston)and KCS's Rosenberg Sub (Macaroni Line) if you do not know anything about railroading, you will think that line belongs to KCS.

I would imagine that QR is Queretaro, MX.

U-SHRV looks like an incomplete UP symbol (USHRVJ), not a KCS symbol. When KCS started operating trains via the rebuilt Rosenberg Sub, "RV" started showing up as both a south origin and south destination code in the UP system, regardless of the KCS origin/destination symbol. Speculation by a couple of UP folks was that the "RV" identified trains using the new route, vs. the symbols used via Flatonia, and that it was a quick fix in the UP system, possibly designating "Rosenberg-Victoria". For example, for quite some time, the former Jackson-Lazaro Cardenas intermodals I-JALZ/I-LZJA showed up in the UP system symboled IJARVJ/IRVJAJ. Ballast trains to/from the Rosenberg Sub during rebuilding often carried USHRVJ UP symbols.
