UP 1982, DPU on IG3OA
Author: jimB

UP 8510, IG3OA ran with UP 1982 (MP Heritage) as a rear facing DPU on Sunday in generally fair weather.

- At Martinez, CA - had hoped he would not be on the platform track, but...
- Telephoto crossing Berrellessa St, Martinez
- At Emeryville, CA from the pedestrian overpass

Part 2...

= Again at Emeryville, CA
- Oakland Yard after cutting off, BART riders get a nice view, if they care
- I believe this was the old Key System underpass. If not, somebody will correct me.

2nd that, rare to see a single unit train and nicely framed, good stuff.

Good catch Jim. The 1982 is one of my more favorite UP Heritage units.

Not a single unit, it was the rear DPU.

Correct, rear DPU. The rules now allow them to have the headlight on as a marker, since they don't otherwise have a marker or use a fred with a flashing light.

Doubles the photo ops.

Love shot #2, The Face of a DPU.

I didn't notice any other railfans in Emeryville and Port of Oakland today. Seems we had a mini-invasion of Santa Clara!

Did they park the 1982 there in Oakland or were they just moving it and you shot it there on the over pass? I have never seen a locomotive parked there before. Great place to get a shot of it though.

They cut the DPU off at that point - it was a pretty long train. It was near the wye, so they probably were going to have a hostler come out and wye it or just move it to the engine tracks near by. Don't think I have seen that before either, but maybe it's a DPU thing.

The DPUs are normally cut off the rear of inbound stack trains just outside the north end of the intermodal ramp as shown in the photo. The reason for this is the trains normally take more than one rail to spot, and by the time you finish spotting the entire train and get back to pick up the DPU, the rail would already be flagged up and be in the middle of being unloaded. If you had left the DPU on the train, to get to it at that point would require the ramp to stop their work and come unflag the rail. To avoid this we simply leave the DPU just outside the ramp as pictured and then we can come get and get it without bothering anybody.
