UPY 2005 out and about around Dolores
Author: trainjunkie

In all the years I've been in and around Dolores Yard I've never seen UP's one-off NRE genset UPY 2005 actually moving under its own power. It seems to be the "shop lizard" at Dolores for the most part. But last week I was driving up Alameda Street and saw it with another genset taking a train up that industrial lead that parallels the 405 a bit (sorry, don't know the name of the spur). Anyway, since I had never seen it running before I decided to try to get a shot or two of it. I got ahead of it caught it crossing 223rd Street in Carson. I have to say that it is interesting looking, but as uninspiring as any other genset when it comes to sound (to me, anyway). But man, this little thing has about the loudest damned horn around!

Cheers!

Interesting... Almost looks like an Alco C-415. I wonder if red and gray paint would help the illusion...

Excellent catch. It is still very new looking although it's been around a half dozen years or so.

Well it almost does. We'll forget about the fuel tank geometry and the Blomberg trucks - and simply say it would look more like an ALCo with a round roof! ;)

UPY 2005 was built on the frame of an EMD MP15 (SP 2690). It still looks like an MP15 from the walkways down.

There is ONE big differnce. No big drive shaft spinning just below your feet!

Back in the C415 era at City of Industry, one of them parked on the Engine Spur started making the loudest clanking-and-crashing racket imaginable! I shut that puppy down, and it turned out the the drive shaft had become disconnected from the compressor in the short hood, and was flopping around in the compartment. That shaft must have been 8 inches in diameter - it was huge!

By the way, it looks like you also got 3GS21B 2737 coupled to the 2005. While not as distinctive as the 2005, the 2737 is somewhat unusual in having a diesel particulate filter (big silver box) wrapped around the middle exhaust stack.
