Western Railroad Discussion > Unusual cars....... for what purpose and loadsDate: 03/28/13 12:45 Unusual cars....... for what purpose and loads Author: railtime Found this unique string of cars parked north of Gilcrest on the DP, Denver-Cheyenne. Appears to be a specialty car of some type and fairly recent construction. The loads are covered with a plastic that looks like a vacuum pac. The cargo is irregular in shape. Have not seen anything like this before. Any illuminating information appreciated. Thank You, John.

Date: 03/28/13 14:29 Re: Unusual cars....... for what purpose and loads Author: RioGrandeFan Those cars have been sitting in Gilcrest for quite awhile. I think they appeared mid-December last year and have been sitting there ever since. Obviously the UP is not in any big rush to get these cars in service. I have only seen a handful of them in service with hoods.
Two weeks ago the hoods were all stacked up by the tracks in Brighton just south of the old mill off of Highway 85 and E. Baseline Road. Go east on Baseline Road from Highway 85 and then go south on N Main St. and look left. You'll see them. If you know where to look you can see them from Highway 85. The hoods are different than older coil cars in that they curve over the load lengthwise to the car rather than crosswise. Two hoods per car. Probably some of that there nukuhler stuff.

Then they are placed on the cars. 12 years ago they would just build them and put them on the cars here in the Springs. Nathan Z. Date: 03/28/13 18:51 Re: Unusual cars....... for what purpose and loads Author: ns2557 Grande-Fan Wrote:

I was just going to say this also. Has it been that long ago that they did this? Recall seeing many cars there by the old Restaurant there downtown. Ben Date: 03/28/13 19:33 Re: Unusual cars....... for what purpose and loads Author: DNRY122 There's something odd about the couplers--they don't look like the standard type for freight cars--almost like MU couplers for rapid transit cars. Or is it just the lighting and camera angle?

The only load on those cars is snow. upkpfan Date: 03/28/13 21:27 Re: Unusual cars....... for what purpose and loads Author: wa4umr Looks like a bunch of flat cars in their winter camo paint.
