Was there a news black-out about this spill? Had not heard of it.

There are a few pics being posted about the spill. One in particular shows a backyard with oil covering the entire area. However, the pic also has an exterior heat pump that is black to about 2 ft. The pic said local authorities have blocked coverage. The pic was from a neighbor's view.

What's interesting is that they've reported "capturing" 12,000 barrels of the spill, couldn't
have soaked in much.

Quite a few stories out there:

There's a photo in the Reuters story of oil running down a street.

After listening to an interview with one of the people from the neighborhood on the CBC tonight, I took a shot at finding the precise location (I have not seen a lot of detail in the news reports, other than the town's name). Comparing photos, I believe it happened in the woods just north of the cul-de-sac at the west end of North Starlite Road in Mayflower. What I take for the pipeline right-of-way (in Google Earth) actually passes under the driveways of two houses in the subdivision. Can you imagine having a 90,000 bbl/day crude pipeline within a few feet of your front door?

It happens occasionally here in NJ.

My wife and I were looking at a house for sale in Convent Station NJ. Nice house, nice piece of property. Nice little shed and driveway on an adjacent, nicely landscaped property. "Oh that's a service building for the water company, I think" mentioned the real estate agent.

Turned out to be a relay station for the pair of 30 inch natural gas pipelines passing about 10 feet underground...
