I know that this has been asked before, but what are the cost per mile for a private rail car owner to ride on the back of Amtrak?

Basically $2.10/mi with a minimum and additional charges for switching, etc.

Reminds me of the old saw about yachts: if you have to ask, you can't afford one.

Isn't there a first class passenger fare component added as well?

Owning a private railcar makes purchasing a Yacht seem like a sound financial investment.

A yacht is a hole in the water you throw money in. A private rail car is a land yacht. That's the only difference.

Just out of curiosity, I'm not sure how to politely ask this (but I'm not asking for details)----but I have always wondered, since owning a private railcar is lots and lots of costs built into it, does a PV owner ever make money? Or is it more of a break-even thing that is done for fun?

I just read through all of the replies. So I suppose that most PV owners who run railfan and overnight trips are doing it for fun, and are not making any money and just break even----maybe. Whew....you've gotta love your PV to do this!
