Western Railroad Discussion > Tehachapi DerailmentDate: 05/20/13 09:00 Tehachapi Derailment Author: GEU50C A major derailment happened early this morning just south of tunnel 10 near the Tehachapi Loop. It's apparent cause was a BNSF autoveyor train into the rear of a UP manifest train. At least a dozen cars on the ground in various degrees of damage. Fortunately there were no injuries.
Date: 05/20/13 09:07 Re: Tehachapi Derailment Author: tronarail The local ABC News in Bakersfield reported that the UP rear ended a BNSF enroute to Richmond, and reported 3 locomotives and 11 cars on the ground. News photos show mostly autoracks involved. What does this one make? 5 accidents in a month on this stretch of track?

Date: 05/20/13 09:32 Re: Tehachapi Derailment Author: tronarail I checked the local TV stations links, and there's no mention of the derailment yet. The story was on their broadcast version, so I expect it will be on their websites sometime today. However, by the same token, there were no injuries or hazmat involved, so the story does not have priority. The stations here are: KBAK, KERO, and KGET. Using those call letters and a ".com" should connect you with their websites. KBAK's site is BakersfieldNow.com, if that helps.

JB Date: 05/20/13 10:16 Re: Tehachapi Derailment Author: tehachap I have to wonder if the fact that they've been re-doing all of the signals has anything to do with this.

What has been the progress on the connecting of the Walong (M.P. 352.07) and Marcel (353.08) sidings? The short 4,800 foot Walong siding is out of step with today's rail traffic. The Walong-Marcel double tracking will make things a whole lot better, but with this double tracking the north end and south end will both have non-traditional right handed switches, which could be problematic. I don't recall hearing that term. Cliff Date: 05/20/13 19:10 Re: Tehachapi Derailment Author: fredkharrison Cliff wrote: What do you mean by "non-traditional right hand

Concerning the matter of a righthand switch at both ends of the double track, identifying which track is the main and which is the siding could be confusing.
