Author: philippe UPT 6 and UPT 8 were on an eastbound UP manifest at Granby, CO on the Moffat Sub early today. What is the purpose for these cars...propane? On the front right ends the is stenciled "Fuel Management" Sorry for the long distance shot but it was a grab shot.

Date: 03/02/14 15:59 Re: UP Tank Cars...Purpose? Author: brc600 These were fuel tenders. I have great cloudy day shots of these actually being used. BN phased out fuel tenders because of frame fatigue issues, especially when coupled between locomotives.

Author: 3rdswitch Definatley not propane as they are not high pressure cars. Diesel fuel.
JB Date: 03/02/14 16:25 Re: UP Tank Cars...Purpose? Author: binder001 UP had a brief flirtation with fuel tenders, placed between locomotives. After the termination of the tests most of the fuel tenders languished at Fox Park in Council Bluffs. They may be carrying company fuel or on their way to other uses. If I remember right, most of these were converted from UP O-70-1 tank cars. That would place them at well over 50 years old, so I doubt they can be used for interchange.

Nathan Date: 03/02/14 17:58 Re: UP Tank Cars...Purpose? Author: tomstp They may be like BNSF. Buy diesel where it is cheaper for their own use and ship it where it is not.

Date: 03/02/14 18:11 Re: UP Tank Cars...Purpose? Author: pdt we have 2 tank cars traveling with a tie gang here in Paso Robles, CA. I expect they have fuel for the track machines. I guess that is cheaper than trucking fuel these days.

They are not high pressure tank cars. The big domes are a dead give away. They're former fuel tenders that are back to hauling diesel fuel in company service. |
