Almost 8 Years Ago...Throwback Thursday?
Author: SantaFe9820

In memory of when the BNSF was interesting. You won't find a set of SD40s like this nowadays, now there'd just be two GEVOs pulling this westbound grain. I'm particularly fond of that white-face third out.

Picture by my Dad, Mark Baxter, in Burlington, Ia on April 21st, 2006.
PS sorry for the small image size...

Ooooh straight 40's - great! I suppose the Brand New Super Frisco has lost some of its luster, in comparison to consists like this, but there is more variety on the BNSF system right now than there has been for quite some time. Thanks for sharing.

Gosh, you wouldn't know it after spending a day trackside around here..other than the occasional CP or CREX unit, it's all pumpkin and executives around here!

You mean the "dirt face". A great set of my favorite locos to run.

WHEN the BNSF was interesting? BNSF has never been MORE interesting! What with all the power shortages and C. Rexes scurrying around, you wouldn't believe this is one railroad! NS heritage units on oil trains, leased CP engines, frequent "whose railroad is this anyway" moments...please think again before saying "when the BNSF was interesting".

Well, I think he means when BNSF's own power was more interesting - like the rainbow lashups of the first 5-7 years of the company's existence. Apart from local power, BNSF is very homogenous here in Southern California - where just about every train is pulled by sets of ES44DCs.

That is not a whiteface, although the large logo on the nose is interesting and unusual.

At least other parts of the BNSF are interesting. New ACEs (8500s) are now showing up, after the long dry spell of GE only. SD75Ms and Dash 8s are out and running again. Lots of foreign power running around, and coal power (AC's) are showing up on unusual trains. Not all of it is getting turned at Barstow, so you might be surprised in the coming months.

Whoops, didn't realize that saying "the BNSF is boring" would personally offend someone. My bad!
