Western Railroad Discussion > Everybody Is A Rail Fan At This SpotDate: 07/31/14 00:42 Everybody Is A Rail Fan At This Spot Author: walstib Boys, girls, men and women — everybody is a rail fan on the Carkeek Park bridge when a train rumbles along this double-track section of the BNSF along the shore of Puget Sound north of downtown Seattle.
In this shot, the evening Q from Seattle heads north just after sunset yesterday. Date: 07/31/14 01:29 Re: Everybody Is A Rail Fan At This Spot Author: boiler77 Jo. You're right. They all are railfan. Or they became it along the seting sun.
Phil Date: 07/31/14 06:54 Re: Everybody Is A Rail Fan At This Spot Author: railstiesballast Being that close to a train with a drone?
Is it safe for the train crew, or do you only get lower after the head end passes? How does the drone handle the turbulence from the train. (or are you on another bridge over the track?) Tor in Eugene Date: 07/31/14 10:02 Re: Everybody Is A Rail Fan At This Spot Author: walstib It is a cool spot. And its a great spot for flying the quadcopter because you can see the train coming for quite a distance, thus have enough time to get in the air and into position for when it comes by.
Here's a photo of what the train looked like when it first came under the bridge. Not one, but two warbonnets last night. This is the nightly intermodal from Seattle (Q-train to Chicago, I think) and last night it came by just minutes after the sun set. I was hoping it would be by before the sunset, but there was some sort of delay at King Street. (I picked up radio chatter about track inspectors finishing up at King Street and this train was holding at Spokane Street, south of the depot.) Maybe tonight I can catch it before sunset. Meantime, the second photo is the Tuesday-edition of the train at the same spot. But it really doesn't have much of a beach there. Pretty much the same as when I was there in the late 60's, except for the paint jobs.
