Just fishin'...

...except the fish isn't in the water.

A classic scene, a poem that you don't read but see with your eyes, or maybe you hear it in a country song. An old truck parked along the side of a state highway near a bridge over a creek. Fishing poles in the back, driver nowhere to be seen.

Railfan photographers, we fish, we don't need to hang around water to do so but we fish. If we're lucky patience pays off and we snag a good one.

The one type of fish both fisherman and railfan can catch? Catfish. Fisherman have the legitimate version, railfans made up their own, and that being the nickname they gave Norfolk Southern units, particularly their fleet of C40-9Ws. I don't know who started the nickname but with the stripes on the side looking like whiskers, NS units sure do have a "fishy" appearance.

1) "Catfish" NS 9606 leads a westbound manifest over Kansas Highway 4 north of Herington, KS on July 29th, 2014. An old Ford truck is parked just off the shoulder with an apparent fishing net in the bed. The fisherman is nowhere to be seen but you can unquestionably doubt that the catfish high above is what he's hoping to catch. There is a creek under the highway bridge that is under the railroad overpass.

Thanks for taking a bite.

Lucas
