Bye Bye California
Author: slug96

So, today is the day I move from my home in San Pedro, CA to a small, little dorm at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ. I'm very excited to begin a new chapter in my life, but am I still glad I get to keep writing another one. Even though I'm moving 500 miles away, I still get to do what I love, take pictures of trains. Same trains, just in a different state. On the way out east, I followed Route 66 along the Needles Subdivision one more time to photography some trains. I was quiet lucky for not stopping at any location for a good amount of time. Then, I decided to spend last light at Kingman; which was the right choice as I had a good parade of eastbound traffic.

I hope you enjoy my photos from this "quick" adventure along Route 66.

You are moving to an area which is highly photogenic. I envy you. The area west and east of Flagstaff is great for photos. The station itself makes for a good shot. Above all, enjoy your newly found surroundings. Flagstaff is a pretty cool town.

Congrats, Make sure you visit Winslow and the La Posada. Great ambiance and the food is great. May be a bit pricey for a student, but worth saving up for. A half mile east on the same street is a little Mexican restaurant called the Casa Blanca. Their specialty is a blue corn, green chili chicken enchilada. Very reasonably priced and exceptionally good.

Excellent pictures!

'Nother NAU guy, here. Bury Hall, then Sechrist, early '70s. Good luck with your studies.

My family ate at the Casa Blanca in Winslow on a Grand Canyon and vicinity vacation in the '60s. It was good back then, too.

When you need a space to just read go down to the park by the station. Of course you will be interrupted by the trains...darn.

66, those were the days! i've gotten the impression from your posts over the years that you worked for the railroad. would that be correct?

Don't forget to study a bit between photo adventures...LOL When I was at UCLA I'd get calls from friends at the various engine terminals in Los Angeles about some odd unit, demo unit and the like and there went an afternoon when I should have been hitting the books. btw, back then I'd see about two other railfans in a year at the various spots.

At some point, take a weekend and head over to Jerome. It's an old
copper mining town, and rather "funky" these days. Lots of abandoned
right-of-way from the old mining railroads. Also in that area, in
Cottonwood, is the Verde Valley Railroad. It's a tourist operation
running old Alaska Railroad F7's. Beautiful ride up the canyon.

Good luck with this stepping stone to adulthood! This is my oldest daughter's first year of college too. Her drive to college is about 350 miles shorter but not near as scenic. It has been a couple of decades since I was last in Flagstaff, it seems like a great college town.
