Tennessee Pass 2014
Author: jc76

I have only been back to Tennessee Pass a couple times since it closed in 1997. This is one of the only digital pictures I have ever taken on the pass. It sits silent, waiting for a train that will likely never come.....

Beautiful angle and day. The trains that have passed that spot. Sigh.

So the Aspens are lighting off. Are they turning on the Cumbres route?

From what I heard, go within the next two to three weeks....

The line would have to be completely rebuilt before trains could operate on it every day.

Here's an interesting dream for the line: http://crcprailway.weebly.com/main-line.html

Wonderful photo. I've always thought that there is something eerily beautiful about abandoned railway lines.

Not the exact same spot, but close.

1. Train headed downhill in opposite direction of the original posted photo. D&RGW 179, Ford Fast train, going to Minturn. April 1977

2. Almost same location as post, but from the highway side looking back towards Minturn, EB uphill DRWW Sept 1980

Wow, my site is now mentioned on TO. :D
I am tempted with dragging CRCP over to Train Simulator 2015.

Would there be any advantage to BNSF if they could get the Tennessee Pass route? A sortcut from Texas to the Northwest?
Look how heavily they use the Inside Gateway (WP) in CA now. I know it's pointless speculation but we all like to play railbaron.

BNSF has no lines connecting Salt Lake or Ogden to the north or northwest. So they would have to beg for more trackage rights from that area and I can't imagine UP being willing to get competition on the routes they have.

I5 corridor via Keddie Y over trackage rights to Denver then South to Texas is a corridor currently not really utilized. The bean counters are the only ones that truly know what is cheapest to run. T Pass bypass es the cluster of Denver and the Joint Line. But you would have to know fuel consumption, locomotive utilization numbers , and crew costs of Texas via T Pass versus other routes to know what is cheapest, regardless of if the mileage is shorter.....

I took the attached photo at Leadville Junction, looking south, a couple of weeks ago. I'm a new subscriber and this is the first time I've posted a photo.
