Update on the UP #942 at OERM
Author: TomPlatten

Last Thursday, three of our members converged on Car barn #4 about midday for the purpose of extracting a broken piston from the UP 942. By late afternoon the cylinder head, broken piston, and the cylinder liner were removed. A refurbished liner was located in our storage boxcar. We now need the proper seals, a new head, and a new piston as they were all damaged. Photo #1 shows the liner with the broken piston. Photo #2 shows the broken piston after removal!

Assume this is a 567 but what version? A, B, U, turbo....?

Wont you also need to match the liner bore with a correct Dia piston?

We have people who can do that!

When you lose a piston like that, where do the pieces go? Is the crankcase full of metal chips now? What is done to remove all the nasty bits? (excuse my ignorance on big diesels, all of my mechanical experience is autos and motos).

Complete oil and filter change, flush out oil passages,
the oil pumps(2), the pumps should be removed and inspected,
potentially they may need to be replaced, these are mounted
on the front of the engine and the oil strainer housing!

Open up and wipe down the crankcase, to remove any pieces
of the piston.

My question, after looking at the photo of the piston,
How long was that engine run with the blown piston?

The piston crown, whats left of it, doesn't show any fresh
fracturing(Rough Edges), the edges looked kinda polished and
rounded!

I've spent almost 35 years working on diesel engines, including
EMDs and have never seen a piston look like that, especially right
after a failure!!

That's a 567C piston. It's actually the old 8-post design; it was replaced by alternate heat flow 8409499 sometime in the 1960's. So that piston has been going up and down for a long time!
