Western Railroad Discussion > 3 Hours In Kansas CityDate: 10/17/14 10:45 3 Hours In Kansas City Author: CP_M260 Yesterday afternoon, I left home with the intention of driving "just" to the West Bottoms, to try and catch a few yard transfers, along with any interesting power that may (or may not) be around. I think I can safely say I accomplished my goal, plus some, though I ended up driving 150 miles. According to the time stamps on my images, the 1st photo was recorded at 1515, and the last at 1832. Not a bad way to spend part of an afternoon.
Enjoy! 1. Starting up the hill at ESS Maxwell, BNSF train M KCKGAL1 16A rolls along with a neat set of power, including a rare-for-Missouri ATSF painted GP60M, BNSF 104 2. A roster of the GP60M. I'm told the unit is on its way to Chicago, for contract-PTC installation 3. At Bedford Ave, CREX 1427 rolls East for headroom to set out 5 bad ordered cars at Murray Yard, as BNSF 7605 waits for entrance to Argentine on the point of train M NSIKCK1 13A Date: 10/17/14 10:48 Re: 3 Hours In Kansas City Author: CP_M260 4. A better view of the consist of the NSIKCK, which included a freshly painted NS SD60E
5. Just before sunset, a CP transfer from the NS at Avondale crosses the AS&B bridge over the Missouri River, with a trio of factory-fresh KCS SD70ACes in tow 6. A second view of the CP train, at the Olive Street grade crossing just shy of entering Knoche Yard Thanks for looking, -Dalton Date: 10/17/14 11:01 Re: 3 Hours In Kansas City Author: sd39 Excellent for 3 hours of work!!
Clarence Date: 10/17/14 11:02 Re: 3 Hours In Kansas City Author: Railfan2 great pics and power lashups. Look at all those x-Rock hoppers!
Date: 10/17/14 11:48 Re: 3 Hours In Kansas City Author: highgreengraphics That AS&B bridge is interesting, wonder if that was a lift bridge at one time? Looks like it may have been, but did they really suspend the deck bridge under the truss with hangers, and if so I wonder why? One of the more unusual setups I have seen. Thanks! === === = === JLH
Date: 10/17/14 11:55 Re: 3 Hours In Kansas City Author: dpc37 The transfer was the KCS transfer they pick up both KCS and CP cars at the

Thanks! === === = === JLH Thanks! It's still an active lift bridge. The close portion does rise for river traffic when necessary. The bridge tender for the Hannibal Bridge controls this bridge, which is about 1/2 mile to the East of the Hannibal. At one time, the bridge carried auto traffic, plus two street-car tracks on the top level of the bridge. -Dalton Date: 10/17/14 12:34 Re: 3 Hours In Kansas City Author: alco636 Wow! Great shots, thanks for sharing!

Brian Stevens Date: 10/17/14 13:03 Re: 3 Hours In Kansas City Author: wag216 The ASB bridge was double-deck; The top deck used the Kansas City, Clay County and St. Joseph Railway (1913 - 1933)) and the North Kansas City streetcars (1911 - 1938) were run on the bottom deck.
For the whole story, buy a copy of the book HEARTLAND TRACTION by Edward A. Conrad. (Yes, I am a friend of Ed's but I have no any money in the book) wag216 (Art Gibson) Date: 10/17/14 13:19 Re: 3 Hours In Kansas City Author: rbx551985 Wow, I didn't know there were so many "ROUTE ROCK" grain cars left in the sky-blue paint scheme IN ONE PLACE, as seen on train NSIKCK, shown in 2 photos above. What were their reporting marks? MWCX or some other company? 'Great series of photos!
