Western Railroad Discussion > From the Archives: Alaska Railroad 2.16.13Date: 01/20/15 00:24 From the Archives: Alaska Railroad 2.16.13 Author: mtgteam2 There hasn't been much action on the Alaska Railroad these days. Currently there are 5 barges backed up in the Gulf of Alaska due to bad weather, not really bad here in Anchorage, just overcast no snow. First barge is set to arrive tonight with the weather clearing tomorrow so maybe some new pictures tomorrow but for now here are three I took almost 2 years ago.
1. An empty northbound coal train negotiates the slide zone at Kern a few miles south of Girdwood. As I recall this slide, although not very big was fairly recent. Lots of snow in 2013. 2. A telephoto view of the train as it passes the slide. 3. The last shot before the weather turned, it happens quickly here, is the train along the big curve at Girdwood with the snow capped Chugach Mountains as the background. Thanks for looking. I wonder if any off the bridges had to be made stronger to handle this 6 loco set Even the road bed in places may need some help too. Any news on this...yours..snoopy Date: 01/20/15 06:37 Re: From the Archives: Alaska Railroad 2.16.13 Author: 3rdswitch Very nice, really like that third one.
