a Monday meet . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

. . yesterday was a post with a few photos taken on the north end of the Alameda Corridor known by locals as the "trench". The Corridor begins near downtown Los Angeles at what was once Redondo Jct and runs south twenty miles ending at the Ports of LA and Long Beach. The northern ten miles are below street level in a trench which eliminated alot of street crossings in the LA suburbs as well as reduce and in some cases eliminate use of the four original routes from LA to the Ports. IMHO BNSF was the biggest beneficiary as it's route was the longest and slowest of the four. In April '06 a westbound BNSF "shuttle" job was in the trench (top) and about to pass an eastbound BNSF empty ethanol train near the south end (bottom).

Do the locals ever throw rocks, cement blocks etc in the trench or on the trains?

Very interesting, JB! It looks like it would have been a weird experience the 1st few times riding through there...

Throwing or dumping stuff - possible. But they have to heave it over that fence on both sides too and it most likely would land at the edge instead of on the tracks. Cinder blocks would most likely crush when they hit bottom as it is a long drop. Note the walkway on both sides, the crap would have to be lifted the 8 ft and then thrown inward to reach the tracks. I would think it is rare but sometimes possible.

The AAPRCO special train of the 2008 San Pedro conventions passed though the corridor on the way back from San Diego on the way to the storage tracks in San Pedro. Running about 5-hours late aboard Silver Lariat, it was indeed interesting to ride through while it viewing it from the dome. This was my first trip on a PV and my last trip with a tiered fare; I got maybe 5-minutes in the dome.

Very funny, with MOST of the Corridor both fenced and heavily patrolled very few people make it down there. The walkways are both drainage ditches with metal grating covering. Surprisingly very little is thrown into the trench and when it is it is quickly removed unlike debris along a normal right of way.
