MRONY with retired switchers, neat cars and 5 private cars on #5!
Author: SP8595

I took off early this morning to try my luck shooting the Westbound Amtrak California Zephyr that was to have five private cars on the tail end of the train. As I was just nearing the tracks, I heard the dispatcher tell a maintenance worker up at Crescent that he could have track and time after the Eastbound train was past him so I headed to the road crossing at Plainview.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was the Roper, Utah to Denver manifest (MRONY-23) with SD70AH 8899 leading. The train had seven engines on the point that included four road engines, GP60 1104 (ex SSW 9659) and a pair of retired MP15DC switchers, the UPY 1370 and UPY 1376 (ex MP 1370 and 1376)
It is kind of a strange position to see the switchers at in the consist as the rule states that they should be placed as the second and third engines!

The GP60 seems to have been stored at Fresno earlier this year and I'm not sure where the switchers had been sitting at but they are pretty beat up! The train also had some interesting freight cars and I will also post pictures of all 5 of the private cars so 18 pictures total will be posted:}

1)UP 8899 heads East past Plainview with the Flatirons in the background.

2)UPY 1370

3)UPY 1376, I wonder if these engines are heading off to scrap?

I tried exploring around the Barbara Gulch area just East of Rocky but couldn't find a place to fit in all the engines:{

4)8899 and entourage continue Eastbound

5)Another view of the switchers with windows knocked out and others looked to have been smashed with rocks!

6)A couple of gons back in the train (MP 956058 and GONX 310525 loaded with what appears to be large chunks of marble! I wonder if these were loaded from the marble quarry located South of Aspen?

10)I almost missed shooting this car but got it going away. Western Pacific 7737 is now used to haul scrap ties, I assume that it was built to haul scrap metal?

11)Maintenance of Way gondola SP 338187

12)Amtrak #5 with engines 89 and 195 head around the Little Ten Curve approaching the West end of Rocky siding running about 2 hours late. The afternoon clouds formed early this morning:{

13)I kind of misjudged how long the train would be so I unfortunately had to shoot it with all of the curve greasers in the foreground:{

minUte as it may be ... i'm not sure if other posters share my sentiment but i have a pet peave about when posting multiple images in a series that it not be interrupted especially when i'm stating more photos will be posted like this poster had ... now with that being said why can't people wait until the guy is done his series ... it's not like he's not stating how many photos are left to post which i could be wrong but assume he would like an uninterrupted photo series ... nice images BTW ...

Great series of images! Even with the greaser in the foreground, your shots of #5 turned out excellent!

Excellent photos, John,
Those switchers should be heading to St. Louis.  UP is auctioning 75 units off in St. Louis at the end of this month.  Units up for auction include mostly MP15DCs, C40-8s, and SD40-2s.

Thanks for sharing a GREAT series.  You managed to bag a great looking consist in the process.  Love the gondola loads, too bad you didn't get a shot of that scrap load though.

at the last auction in Denver a few years ago, the switchers were getting more than the tunnel motors and sd40's,iirc

Palm leaf was rebuilt in Denver quite a few years ago as well, salbury beach is for sale now, for like

Interesting, I wonder who would want those C40-8s?

What's the reason for the rule that the switchers should be 2nd and 3rd?
