Western Railroad Discussion > A "Yellow Submarine" along U.P.'s Coffeyville Sub.Date: 05/25/15 09:20 A "Yellow Submarine" along U.P.'s Coffeyville Sub. Author: JoCoLB There was a derailment on the Union Pacific Railroad's Coffeyville Sub. near Benedict, KS, on Jan. 15, 2015. A northbound train struck a loaded dump truck, with the power and some cars derailing. One of the engines was left behind following the clean-up operation. Now, recent flooding has left the abandoned locomotive under several feet of water. Wonder if this engine will still get rebuilt. Unfortunately, I don't have an engine number.

One has been removed from the site but unknown which one. Hopefully, someone will figure out which one remains stranded.

Date: 05/25/15 09:35 Re: A "Yellow Submarine" along U.P.'s Coffeyville Sub. Author: fbe Perhaps the UP might take it to Little Rock and swap out a lot of components with Bush 41 so the static loco can get all the junk parts and the like new low mileage parts can get out on the road. Maybe just repaint the blue unit into yellow and the yellow unit into blue and swap the numbers.

Author: TexasEagle77 You say this wreck occured in January? Sure has been sitting there awhile seeing as this now May, almost June. If it was to be rebuilt you would have thought UP would have removed it sooner.
Ricky Austin, TX Date: 05/25/15 10:52 Re: A "Yellow Submarine" along U.P.'s Coffeyville Sub. Author: fbe That would have required planning for a lot of equipment and people to get together at this place at the same time. You need the Cat Pack, a couple of heavy lift (100 tons +) cranes and two heavy capacity flatcars and a place to load them. In hindsight it would now appear the units should have at least been dragged to higher ground before the Spring rains.
I wonder how the trucker's insurance is going to deal with this now? TexasEagle77 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > You say this wreck occured in January? I havn't been back since the day after the wreck when the first train went through after the line was re-opened. Just last week I was wondering if they were still there or if they had been removed.
Brian Stevens Date: 05/25/15 12:00 Re: A "Yellow Submarine" along U.P.'s Coffeyville Sub. Author: JoCoLB Sorry for the misinformation about one of the engines being previously moved from the Benedict derailment. Forgive my forgetfulness. Must have been another engine at another mishap that I saw being removed in a photo on trainorders. I do know that two engines were recently removed from a U.P. wreck near Galva, Kan.

As much as I'd like to see it "stuck to" the negligent trucking company and their insurance, I can't get on board with the notion that they should be liable for the flood damage. Incredible that UP left those units on site for such a long time.

Author: Milwaukee Given the position of the units in the post derailment photo, the UP crews afterwards look to have been the ones who moved the units to the lower ground next to the track. I'm sure they were just racing to reopen the track but failed to think how the units would be recovered or when they would be recovered. It is very strange that UP would essentially abandon the units there unless there was some litigation going on as a result of the accident cause. Anyone know if there is litigation that may have caused UP to leave them close to the accident site and not mess with them?

If indeed there was litigation, it raises the question -- who pays for the water damage now? Regardless, it's another victory for billable hours! Posted from iPhone |
