UP 2010 (BSA) and BNSF's Buck Local
Author: ColoradoRailfan

Good morning!

You may have seen SP8595's great post of UP 2010 leading on the MRONY on UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub. While he was getting some shots from high above at the Blue Mountain grade crossing, I was down at track level for a few shots. Drifting clouds were casting shadows all over the place. As the train came around the curve at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, our field of view was entirely in the shade. Fortunately, a small break in the clouds formed right at the grade crossing just in time for the arrival of the train!

After Blue Mountain, we both went down to the east switch of Rocky. At that point, SP8595 headed home. I ventured further east in to Arvada and setup for a final set of shots at the 66th Avenue grade crossing.

=============

1. UP 2010 leads the MRONY through the curves at Coal Creek Canyon on the approach to the Blue Mountain road crossing. Note the train descending from Tunnel 1 in the distance, still stuck in the shade.

2. The train highballs at the east switch of Rocky.

3. On the approach to the grade crossing at 66th Avenue. The last signal was an approach diverging, so the train will be running on Main 2 once it get to CP DS007.

After parting ways with the MRONY, I had a bit of time and headed for Broomfield on BNSF's Front Range Sub. The Buck Local was headed for the siding of Broomfield off the 4.5 mile long Lafayette Branch. Not much was happening on the Front Range Sub on this afternoon as the local received a track warrant with a Box 4 between MP 13 and MP 45! The train came off the branch, spotted its cars on the main, then ran around them through the siding. After the air was pumped up, the train departed north for Longmont.

4. The Buck Local comes around the bend near the south end of the Lafayette Branch. A pair of ex-ATSF B40-8Ws have been in charge of the local for quite awhile now.

5. A look at the trackwork as part of the Broomfield siding extension. The last boxcar of the local is coming over the new switch to the Lafayette Branch. The track behind the train (on the non-diverging route) is the freshly-ballasted, though not yet in service, siding. The track in the foreground is the main line.

6. Its run-around complete and its air pumped up, the local now heads back toward Longmont. BNSF 521, a B40-8W Warbonnet with an interesting patch job on the long hood, leads the way.

That's it for this post! Have a good Friday.

Great shots, Kevin! I don't believe I've ever seen a shot of a train on the Lafayette Branch like yours... Nice catch.
