Sad news. 2 UP employees and their 4 children die in house fire.
Author: unclebob

Local KS railcrews and railfans probably have heard "Mike Speer, who many Herington railroaders knew for years as Dispatcher 72 JMS".  The story does not state what position his wife had with UP.

Omaha World Herald said the wife was a customer service rep.  Sad indeed.

Really sad, looked like a real nice family, now under police investigation, things like this just
shouldn't happen.

Recently moved into the home, there are so many tragic elements to this story.

Time to swap out  detector batteries in a few weeks. Every home should have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Terrible tragedy-- their dream house/location apparently backfired- no pun intended--on them with the fireplace soot buildup causing the disastrous  fire.  They must have been totally overcone  with smoke preventing them to evacuate.  So very very sad.

It doesn't get any worse than this. What an awful, sickening tragedy.

His wife was also a dispatcher where they met in training. She eventually moved over to HQ.   Mike was a fantastic guy to work with and well respected by all. The entire family works for UP.
His mom is a manager along with his brother who is also a dispatcher.  His dad recently retired.
The entire office is in mourning.   My hope is UP offers grief counceling to those in need.

Yes it is.  Please keep in mind the firefighters who had to find the bodies, especially the children.  Makes for a bad night at work.

A fund site for funeral expenses has been established, copied from the Altamont Press site, surprised no one on this
side has picked this up:

The local NBC affiliate, WOWT news, is reporting this morning that authorites have determined the cause of the fire was embers/ashes from the living room fireplace igniting the carpet and nearby furnishings.  The cause of death of the family was smoke inhalation.
