Hambone hogger?
Author: santafe199

About a week ago a question was asked about who was running the 844 as it entered Topeka, KS. It appeared that someone besides Ed was actually running the engine. In a photographic blitzkrieg at Tyler Street and the Great Overland Station I was sure I had seen (& photographed) Ed in the fireman’s seat rolling up to the station. A check of my images confirmed the fact. Sure as shootin’, there is Ed leaning out the fireman’s side. Maybe it’s just a HUGE coincidence that there was a large throng of camera-totin’ people on the north (fireman’s) side of the train as it stopped at the G.O.S. You decide…

1. UP 844 crosses Tyler St, approaching…

2. …the Great Overland Station in Topeka, KS on October 15, 2016.

Thanks for looking!

So what's the point - who cares either way?

He is always on the side where the people are so HIS photo is taken. Most people have no idea who is running the machinery and he takes advantage of it.

For what it's worth, I'm interested but, don't care. How's THAT?

Obviously, who ever asked the question that Lance responded to cared.

I remember one doubleheader trip I was working both sides of the cab to help the guest fireman keep up.

Whoa whoa whoa... A modern day steam crew trying to show off for foamers? Absolutely unbelievable!

Put simply Craig, ''30-somethings" like yourself really don't care.   Those of us who grew-up in another, very different era
(meaning that we're OLDER -- and probably -- though not necessarily --wiser in the grand scheme of how things work)
care a very great deal -- due to the overall implications/ramifications of the last 5 years+ of the 'Cheyenne Soap Opera'.

It's pretty apparent that the "Ed Dickens is a God"/ "Ed Dickens is the Devil incarnate" factions separated 5+ years ago --
along the lines of their relative ages.   Obviously, there are more Pro-Ed/Anti-Ed schisms involved,
but this one is particularly noticeable.

Put another way, newbies and neophytes can't wade, won't try to wade through the current Cheyenne propoganda. .
Worse, perhaps -- I expect that the younger crowd have no particular desire to seek-out-the-truth, anyway.
All they know is that 8444 (whoops, 844 !) runs; 4014 is being worked-on, and that's good enough for them.   How we got-to-here jus' don't matter.
Hey, who needs a Challenger to be up-and-running, when there's a Big Boy comin'-down-the-pike'...    Whoop!

Those of us who have been truly attached (in whatever capacity, or to whatever degree) to the UP Steam Program
for 45-50-60 years have a slightly different take on all of this, however.

It's my humble opinion that a very great deal of the relatively-young "SoCal crowd" (& others, of course)  just...don't...get...it.
And they don't get it.    Nor will they.

Puh-leez, "SoCal" kidz, none of that "Hater" BS, 'k?   Being 62-years-old, I've long-since grown a tendency to call 'em as I see 'em.
& Without all the 'PC' B.S. attached.  If that hurts anybody's feelings.....well....."ain't-that-a-bitch?"

Looking on the bright side though, perhaps you can strike up a deal with Big Ed for some stainless steel bid-ness cardz.

Best Regards, Craig,
Pat from Littleton Colorado

(Your scale-model signals were/are terrific, though!)

Many of us who realize and are humored by the fact that the guy is such an egocentric narcissist, enjoy seeing his antics to make sure everyone trackside sees and/or photographs him in the cab of an operating steam engine.  I had to laugh, watching a freind of mine's Flickr video of the engine going by a random grade crossing a few days ago, there's old Ed hanging out the side making sure he's well seen.  The unsaid implication of posts like this one being that most professionals at his level wouldn't be such obvious "hambones."  They might secretly want to be, but wouldn't make it so obvious.  Of course the pro Ed/anti Ed factions are going to see things differently.

Ted, the "normal" Fireman, who was also a UP Engineer out of the Denver pool, and a close friend of the current manager.

Lance,
I'm not sure why everything on TO goes political but thanks for a very nice post and previous posts of the 844. And thanks especially for putting up with all the rants!
