New snow covers Pikes Peak
Author: skyview

BNSF 7451 leads a northbound merchandise train south of Castle Rock, CO, on Colorado's Joint Line.  New snow covers the summit of Pikes Peak, seen above the train.  Despite 7-9" of snow 24 hours earlier at the location of this image, very little remained, owing to warm surface conditions rapidly melting the newly fallen snow.

Nice location on Main #2 back between Castle Rock and Larkspur!

Looks like these locos are melting the snow on the peak!

What I'm really curious about is the nearby block signal.  It appears it's showing a side view of the three color indications with their hoods aimed at the field and at a 90˚ angle to the black back board.  Can't understand how this is possible.  Is this a bi-directional with only one being turned to the field for some reason?  As for the ladder position it does appear normal for a bi-directional signal.

A number of years ago (5 or more dont recall) , UP installed new signals, which appeared that they were to be used for bi-directional running.  The new signals were pointed 90 degrees off the track, as were out of service.  We always felt they would be turned correctly for bi-directional signalling, which never happened.  Not sure what PTC will mean for those signals but guessing they will change again.

I'm guessing that if PTC comes some signals will be entirely eliminated with others will be re-located and become bi-directional, possibly with new cabinets.

BNSF is well on its way to getting signals replaced for PTC, in virtually all cases, at the same location as the previous signals.  As to UP, have not seen any work at all.
