Turbo death on Cable
Author: tehachap

Stack train creeping through Cable at 1:02 p.m. I stopped to pick up the mail 3 blocks away and spotted the smoke. Wondering if they'll set this locomotive out before Mojave.

Someone reported this to the fire department which called BNSF and was told not to worry...

Looks more black than blue/gray smoke. Maybe worn injectors over-fueling. Sorry Cali!

The poor BNSF 4591 sure ain't having a good day!
Looks just like what a steam locomotive would emit
when either sanding the flues or, more likely, making
a lot of black smoke to please the photographers.
That poor thang!!

She is a C44-9W, and was built i Nov., 1999.

Hookdragkick --
Not to worry -- these things happen. Doesn't bother me,
and I'm a Californian, and prefer clean air, but -- whatcha
gonna do when things like this happen? Have a fit? Not me!
BTW -- I LOVE your "handle" -- it's one of the best I've
seem here on TO!

No need to set it out. Shut it down and keep going.

Just another GE impersonating an Alco impersonating a steam locomotive. Nothing unusual to see here.

You've never seen a coal-burning diesel before?

The Goat Boat is staring right at it and saying, "you're making me look real good right now".

Blown turbo would be white and blue smoke. This is probably dirty fuel injectors.

Either way it will probably spend some time in the diesel shop at Barstow.

I thought for a minute there that someone had resurrected an Alco PA.

From prior experience, I feel this is a airflow problem. IE Turbo.

Fuel system issues are usually white/blue smoke.

Not trying to be contrarian, but this is how it usually turned out for me.

I think I'd agree with this, i'm not a railroader but fuel-rich mixtures tend to give blue smoke, poor combustion (lack of air) tends to give dark sooty smoke...
