This Afternoon East Of Denver - Brush & Akron Subs
Author: mojaveflyer

This afternoon I headed east from Denver to grab some shots and try using an app I learned about in this thread in Railfan Technology: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?9,4391773. It appeared that there would be about an hour and forty minute gap between the Milky Way rising over the horizon and the moon rising that would lessen the chance of good photos once the moon came up. I saw some traffic along the Brush Sub including an empty coal train meeting the Hudson Turn power at Roggen and then I moved to Long Bridge Road to try some shots from the bridge. After the sun went down I headed in to Brush to try a restaurant I had heard about and then east to Pinneo siding on the Akron Sub to try some shots of the Milky Way.

Photo #1- The empty passes the Hudson Turn at the west end of the Roggen siding. Apparently the Hudson Turn had to switch the cars at the grain elevator in Roggen. Since the elevator is off of the mainline, the empty was routed through the siding.

Photo #2- I saw a westbound coal load departing the Bijou siding as I arrived and grabbed a couple of shots as he went west. The head end is just above the DPUs in the foreground.

Photo #3- An empty train came by and then the hottest westbound train on this part of the railroad, the Z Chicago - Denver came by.

See Part II for a couple more shots...

After dinner (at the Home Plate in Brush - inexpensive food but well prepared) I headed east to Pinneo siding where I have previously done some night sky photography. There was a bit of a surprise that passed over while I was shooting the Milky Way. The International Space Station made a pass overhead and passed through my field of view. The wind kicked up and after about 45 minutes I decided standing out in a cold wind was not much fun... I headed for home after these shots.

Photo #4- The westbound "Z" passes me. That's I-76 to the right.

Photo #5- The Milky Way didn't disappoint me as I grabbed some shots.

Photo #6- I spotted a satellite making a pass overhead and checked an app on my phone to learn it was the International Space Station passing overhead. I waved so that the 6 people on board wouldn't think I was ignoring them...

Thanks for looking!

I've had some inquiries about these shots... Canon 5D MkII, 17mm lens at f2.8, ISO 3200 at 20 seconds.

Interesting to note an EMP container on the last car on rear of train. EMP is UP pool, so somebody loaded the wrong container for the BNSF route. Lot of UPS loads on the rear, so could be UPS load and UP would have no problem with the error when it is a good customer.

Great picture with the "Image Of The Day"! Reminds me of the book "Railroading From The Rear End" by S.Kip Farrington Jr.
