Here’s a photomontage of UP’s Potash Local which runs once a week on Sundays. The Potash Local originates in Grand Junction, Colorado, travels west on the Green River Sub, then at Brendel, Utah it heads south on the UP Cane Creek Subdivision for the Intrepid Potash Plant near Moab Utah.

Photo 1 - In September 2017 the Potash Local is westbound between Sagers and Thompson Utah

Photo 2 - In September 2015 a typically overpowered Potash Local climbs Vista Hill at Thompson, Utah.

Photo 3 - UP 2197 leads 23 Empties past vibrant Red Sandstone between Seven Mile and Emkay on UP’s Cane Creek Sub.

Photo 4 - In the heart of Bootlegger Canyon, The Potash Local exits the south end of the 7050-foot Bootlegger Tunnel in September 2015.

Photo 5 - Just north of the Intrepid Potash plant, the Potash Local trundles slowly Southbound along worn jointed rail adjacent to the Colorado River

Photo 6 - After Switching Empties for Loads at the Potash Plant, the Potash local and 17 cars are northbound along the Colorado River approaching Gold Bar

Photo 7 - The Potash Local rounds the corner at Gold Bar and prepares to enter the south end of Bootlegger Canyon.


Photo 8 - With the towering La Sal Mountains as a backdrop, the Potash Local rolls northbound at Seven Mile Canyon.

Photo 9 - 2 Freshly shopped UP 6 axle locomotives lead the northbound Potash Local near Canyon Lands Airport. The hills of the northern part of Arches National Park can be seen in background

Photos 10 & 11 - The Potash local heads downgrade towards Brendel UT, the Book Cliff Mountains and the UP Green River Sub.

Are they still dragging uranium tailings out of the Colorado valley down there, or has that cleanup project been completed?

At least it's still running. Just about the only source of traffic left between Helper and Grand Junction.

It was still running when I there in September. On Sundays, the tailings train is parked in a yard at Brendel with UP power at both ends.

Let's see, you're either bummed out that D&RGW no longer exists, or you're bummed out that Genesee & Wyoming hasn't taken over the line YET!
