sigh...
SR

I 'spose I'll go up there and look for it this morning, but I think it probably snowed there last night.

I lost a lens cap earlier this year while out one day...and a tripod (different day)! Annoying...

I dropped a lens cap inside the east portal of Stampede tunnel while there on a tour with Jim Frederickson and the NPRHA in July, 1986. It was darker than dark! Fortunately, someone had a cigarette lighter, so we were able to find it without much difficulty.

A lens cap is an easy enough thing to loose, but a tripod?!
Dude!
SR

I’m writing this from Tunnel 36- Yep, it snowed. That cap is gone ‘till Spring!

I lost a lens cap when I left it on the fender.  Unfortunately it was attached to a lens (but not a camera!).

I lost a lens cap chasing a NS HU. I later went back to where I thought I lost it and never did find it...

Lol...I was shooting stills (handheld) plus video on a tripod...then giving chase to the train...somehow got distracted after taking the camcorder off the tripod....heat of the moment and all that! I went back about an hour later but someone had decided to half-inch the 'pod!

So that's who left me a tripod!!!! Just kidding, never been to Donner Pass. On my bucket list though.

Beautifull tunnel portal. Is it a way to approach it by car? Nice portal to model in scale.

I don't think I ever went on a fan trip that I didn't lose a lens cap. On the other hand, I have found some along the ROW, one even the right size to replace the one I lost!

There isn't anything to physically prevent you from driving out to the tunnel, no gate etc.  You'd actually be driving on the path of the old #1 Track which the UPRR now uses as a service road.
But here's the thing:
I'm pretty sure the RR would not be amused to find you out there, and you'd be pretty hard pressed to come up with a plausible justification for what we all know is tresspassing.  So why do it?
Besides, it's a nice walk.
