1. 2. & 3. UP 6735 slithers westward over a telephoto exaggerated sag between rural Morris County roads 1600 & 1700 west of Dwight, KS. This the ex-Rock Island GSR. 4. The 6735 has risen up to photographer level. (4 photos taken west of Dwight, KS on May 19, 2018) Thanks for looking up & down! Date: 09/14/18 11:41 Re: Kansas is flat, don't you know (vol #3) Dwight, KS Author: SKOChief For a course in heavy grades. See the Moline sub in southern Kansas. Some crazy stuff down yonder. Makes you kick yourself for not making it down there when it was Santa fe. I wish I had a time machine. I could spend weeks staying in Chanute and chasing all the different trains of the southern kansas division.
By the way. The local road switcher to Moline is back on a day schedule. Posted from Android Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/14/18 11:41 by SKOChief. The steep grades, along with those sharp curves, like Lance posted the other day, is why it takes so long to cross Kansas. ;^) BB Date: 09/14/18 19:56 Re: Kansas is flat, don't you know (vol #3) Dwight, KS Author: upkpfan The steepest grades between KC and Denver are right here in Ellsworth CO., KS with 1.50 being the steepest grade and this is on the KP across KS. upkpfan

Woof. Last time I had pancakes THAT lumpy was when I tried to make them from scratch. Total disaster... ;^) Posted from Android Date: 09/15/18 04:41 Re: Kansas is flat, don't you know (vol #3) Dwight, KS Author: SKOChief It may be near 1.5. But I bet it isn’t continuous for 3.2 miles like the moline sub.

On the K&O just west of Larned it was loaded with a long string of stored coal cars with faded red ends. I'm thinking these may be some of those I saw last Winter stored with tall weeds grown around them near Hanston. At that time they looked like permanent property for sure. I don't know about others, but SP had a rules provision that cut some slack (bad pun) if a train slightly exceeded a speed limit in undulating terrain. I wonder if it made a difference whether the train was undulating up, down, or both at the time the official read his radar gun.
(PS I've had to inform folks that Nebraska isn't "flat like Kansas," and not because of Kansas.) Date: 09/15/18 14:17 Re: Kansas is flat, don't you know (vol #3) Dwight, KS Author: RuleG Lee_in_KC Wrote:

That is an interesting article. According to the article, among the ten states with the most flat land is Indiana. However, the nation's steepest standard gauge, line-haul, adhesion wheel railroad grade was in Madison, IN. Date: 09/15/18 15:08 Re: Kansas is flat, don't you know (vol #3) Dwight, KS Author: callum_out Said grade in Madison is pretty much OS at the moment.

Originally built by the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad, the line became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was last operated by the Madison Railroad in 1992. |
