PSR has come to UP's Overland Route.
Author: mapboy

PSR has come to UP's Overland Route.  Manifest traffic and empty unit train cars are being added to work trains, coal trains and low-priority intermodal trains.    Only UPS Z trains seem to be exempt.  Crews are not happy.  Seems like train velocity will slow down with all the pick ups and set outs jamming the smaller yards.  At those yards, this could delay trains waiting to be yarded.  Save some train crew starts, but add yard crews, unless the delays also add crews for dog-catching trains.

As another example, I mentioned before of an eb UP train 9/21/18 east of Portland with 54 cars of double stacks, a flashing FRED, then 101 covered hoppers with another FRED, no DPU.  There are reports of unusually short trains around the system, another sign of PSR.  A friend reports several very short domestic intermodal trains past the Tehachapi Depot cam in the past week or two.  "endmrw" mentions here  <https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4643847,4643847#msg-4643847>  of seeing unusually short trains in Arkansas.  What are you seeing in your neighborhood?

The ZSKDLP picked up a cut of empty tie cars. That were scheduled for the MRORV. I’ve also seen double stack’s mixed in with manifest train’s yarded at Roseville.

MHKRV has started running with a mix of HK and PD (pick-up) traffic. Yesterday it was 4x1x0. 27 cars from Hinkle, 30 cars from Portland. Yet still the MPDRV ran shortly behind it with a full train also.

That would seem to be an improvement, otherwise 30 cars might have spent an extra day at Albina Yard, but the MHKRV saved time previously via by-passing Albina.

To be honest, UP has been filling empty coal trains with manifest traffic on the head end between Coffeyville, KS and North Platte for over a year now so it's not an entirely new concept on UP...

I have heard, short trains go by, and it was not the local. I didn't see them as there is too many everygreens planted around the house by my wife. It helps some in the winter time as I'm able to see the trains a little bit better then from the house. upkpfan

So you are saying they’re running trains with multiple EOTs throughout the train?

So long as they pull Canby (OR) on Friday/Saturday  night ... set out on Saturday/Sunday and ACH money into our account every two weeks we're good with PSR!

I am hearing some big changes coming to the Chicago area.  The hump at Proviso being shut down, and the dispatchers being moved to Omaha are two of the biggest things.

I only saw the one train east out of Portland, but I was curious if others were seeing similar.  I only noticed it because it was during twilight.  Normally during the day you wouldn't notice a mid-train EOT flashing.

We have seen that a few times on the MPXWC trains at Shawmut duing the late night hours. The first time we saw it, it took us by surprise but what else would be flashing red in-between the rail cars.

Sounds like the rear end is being dropped at Yuma or Niland, and then the rest of the train will proceed to West Colton with less delay.

Doesn't the (likely) longer delays in transit times for your customers cause you concern?  Yes, the example talked about here of the MHKRV picking up leftover Roseville cars at Albina is an improvement, but I'd bet money that much worse service will be the over all outcome of this program.

Just heard from a friend along the Gila Sub, there was a train that had Containers, Autoracks and Mixed Freight.

Not seeing many changes in the north/south route through Arkansas so far there have been more trains added since October 1st and as far as containers being in manifest trains that's been going on for a few years in my area
