Looks like a coal train.  Made the news a few minutes ago. https://nbcmontana.com/news/local/emergency-crews-respond-to-train-derailment-01-29-2019

Not the first time they’ve lost coal at that curve...

Missoula evening TV news stations had photos of accordioned cars, some upright, some spilled in the narrows south of the interstate. Snowplows were used to clear coal off the dirt road so residents can get home. Coal is spilled into the creek so hazmat crews are involved. Clean up is expected to take days, that is plural. Fortunately weather is moderate with nothing like the deep sub zero windchills not all that far east.

No sign (yet) of  detours either direction on the Laurel Sub around Great Falls, MT.  The daily east (south) freight just passed at 10pm MST. (Tues). Outside of a Herzog track inspection truck earlier today things are quiet as usual.

For those of us not familiar, is this area uphill or downhill for this train?  History of derailments here?

Downhill foe wb trains. There was a narrow gauge coal branch in the area and a station named Chester for transloads. I don't know about the derailment frequency over time.

Thank you for the info, FBE.  Interesting that it was downhill--I thought maybe it stringlined if this was an uphill grade for this train.

It is hard to say the cause until they dig through more of the mess.

It is hard to stringline loaded coal or grain cars account they are so heavy. What may happen is the weight of the cars may layover the inside rail. That would happen when pulling. If going downhill in dynamic braking it is the outside rail which will turnover.

Jack Roadarmel is a well-equipped contractor out of Three Forks, so they have the equipment and they're very close to the site. He/they have done a lot of grading work for MRL over the years. They were heavily involved in the Mullan Pass siding extensions and do a very good job.
