UP Nampa Sub - Long, Fast Manifest
Author: philhoov

This big, fast WB manifest almost got by me last Saturday.
I heard the initial Kuna detector report, a few miles east, as I approached the area.
But, I didn't hear the second report of speed, axles, etc. after it passed the detector (this often happens with that detector).
Moments later, I had horn/lights less than a mile away.
With six motors (all running), led by UP #8075, it was moving at track speed as it passed by my shooting location a couple of miles east of the Nampa Yard.
It was operating more like a Z train than a manifest.
I followed it into the Nampa Yard, where it departed after a quick crew change.
Lots of power, lots of empties, and a broad variety of seemingly every type of car ever built.
This train was followed by another, shorter WBmanifest half an hour later.
Is this what a PSR train looks like these days?
Can anyone provide the length of this train?

Phil

Great Video and Catch!  We at least see one of those on the Sunset Route since PSR started when we go out on a Saturday.  Usually see some Intermodal Containers mixed in as well.

Sadly, the MP443.1 and MP431.7 detectors (I imagine the same holds for others on the Nampa Sub as well) stopped giving detailed reports in late September 2018.

I count 6 units, plus 141 cars. No idea on actual length, in feet.

Thanks for that info, Cody.
I had no idea.
Good to know that I actually didn't lose my mind.

That was probably the fastest moving manifest I've ever seen.
I shot that a little over a mile from the east end of the UP Nampa Yard.
Lots of speed for being that close to the yard limits.

As  the late Hunter Harrison said , Longer trains mean less trains . Saves on crews etc,  If you look at CSX the last railroad he ran , their freights have become increasingly longer . When he ran CN and CP  longer trains were frequent. I've read where UP has picked up some of his ideas .looks like Longer trains may be one of them,
