Thanks for the post Tim.    I was afraid the 4014 had disappeared into the Nebraska mist after it left here yesterday.  The steam board had turned mighty quiet today.

Well... they didn't offer the public a chance to view it in Grand Island.  As the local newspaper put it: "No public viewing of the stopped locomotive was scheduled in Grand Island during either of its passages through the city.  “Unfortunately, Grand Island is a community where the infrastructure does not allow us to safely invite the public to a Big Boy display,” said Raquel Espinoza, UP’s Senior Director of Media Relations."

Let's see: 844, 3985, and the E-9's have all stopped in Grand Island in the past, and were available for public viewing.  Doesn't take a rocket scientist to "read between the lines" of UP's statement above.

I will give them credit for stopping in Central City though.

Failing to put the Big Boy on public display in Grand Island had to be a bummer for many people. Hard to figure out that decision when other engines in the heritage fleet have been previously displayed.

Whats really to bad is the shop building in GI now leased by the Nebraska Central is the oldest standing building on the UP proper. Still has the overland hearld on the west end. To bad some extra effort wasn't put into a photo opp. for that reason alone.

Be a great idea, wonder about the track getting into the shop area. One positive would have been the available
parking area between the entrance and the building. Maybe some day.

4014 stopped at a crossing in Kearney today and they had people cross the 3 track mainline to see it. Not sure why they couldn’t do something similar in Grand Island?

It's pretty open West of town and wouldn't block any crossings, problem downtown is just that, there isn't much
distance between crossings. The area around the Nebraska Central facility and the yard is industrial with other
than the enginehouse parking area, not very accessible.

Not to mention that it's probably number one on the fire trap list in Nebraska! The thing is very original!

Take heart. It at least reappeared in front of my camera (and a few others') at Maxwell and into North Platte. I just have to make it home so I can download all the images and start the long sifting process. "Film @ 11", you might say...
