BNSF Derailment Creston Sub in Iowa
Author: MILW86A

BNSF has put 30 coal cars on the ground at MP 447 near McPherson Iowa on the Creston Sub. Initial reports say Main 2 is missing a mile of track and No 1 Main pushed over 20 feet. Derailment is accordian style. No ETA on when reopening. Amtrak has requested detour over the UP today for Train 6-11 and for 5-13.

All for now......

It's a cold winter night sitting in front of the fire so time for a bit of uninformed idle speculation, On past form, once the UP has found a cab signalled leader, they will give 5 and 6 no priority at all and they will lose lots more time. BNSF seems to flood and derail west of Ottumwa quite a bit, so UP detours are not uncommon. Why not send 6 down the Rock from Omaha to Des Moines (40 mph railroad I think, but assume II would be motivated to do a good job,) and then on the BNSF/Wabash to Albia- assume this is a 30mph RR at best.  3.5 hours to Des Moines, 2.5 hours on to Albia. 6.5 hours to Ottumwa vs a 4 hour normal schedule. Usual station stops on to Chicago. Less buses needed. Shades of the Rocky Mountain Rocket. Dozes off into a gentle sleep.

Amtrak engines have cab signals that work on the UP. They actually have a cab signal box with two displays on it for position light and seach light style aspects. They're also equipped with a selector switch for UP, Amtrak, Conrail, RF&P, and ICG cab signals. The switch changes the display format and proper reading of the coded rail. The "UP" setting is for the Overland Route ATC between Ogden and Council Bluffs, I believe it will also work on the OSL east of Portland...

Amtrak does not have a setting for the two aspect ex CNW ATC, they will usually put a freight unit on the point, or, a Metra Engine, but haven't seen that done in a while...

Somebody tried to say that ICG and C&NW cab signals were similar.

The now long gone IC cab signals were two aspect, like the original C&NW.
I do not know if the codes transmitted through the rails were the same.
