Nebraska and Kansas out of the way places
Author: bakersfielddave

I drove from Mc Cook to La Junta a few weeks ago as part of vacation travels and stopped briefly at Stratton ,Nebraska and the delightfully named town of Bird City, Kansas

an intermodal was seen at Stratton, but Bird City has not seen anything for quite a time

Bird City i think was on a former  Burlington Branch to Saint Francis

if any one knows of photos of trains at Bird City i would be interested in seeing them especially in the BN era

these small towns were the only life seemed to be an occasional cat sunning itself  are time warps to history

Stratton,an  intermodal passing though

was interesting to see a street named  'Railway'  instead  of  'Railroad'' ....

Last operation on the line to Bird City and St. Francis, Kansas, was the Nebraska Kansas Colorado Railway (NKCR).  Back on 24 May 2011 NKCR ran DLCX 6410, GP40-2, and freshly painted NKCR 5101, GP50, west at Stamford, NE, headed to St. Francis, Kansas.

Rare shot on the St Francis line, they operated as needed sometimes once a month, did nothing to develop
traffic. A new elevator was built privately at Norton on the Kyle to handle traffic Omnitrax wanted to avoid.

looking back at my notes, i drove to La Junta via Sharon Springs,Kit Carson and Eads then followed the old Mopac line through Haswell down to La Junta

the pole line by the railroad looked neglected and i guess it has been a while since this line saw a train

at Sharon Springs was an ex BNSFSD40-2 loco in  private use  and what appeared to be ex Rock Island hopper cars in storage if any one can verify these were RI

.the caboose was seen at Kit Carson ,Colo

the grain loco was originally  a 1980 Burlington Northern  unit of the same number
