My Views Of UP 4014 Heading West On The Limon Sub
Author: mojaveflyer

I (and several hundred others) headed east from Denver this morning to see UP 4014 nearing the end of it's long trip touring the southwestern US. With a cold front approaching from the north I was pleased to see we had clear skies for the chase. The storm arrived in Denver this afternoon with a cold rain that will turn to snow and is predicted to deposit 10" or so along the Front Range in Colorado.

Photo #1- UP 4014 eventually crested the ridge climbing out of Limon. It was slowed by large numbers of people standing near the tracks leaving Limon. It was sunny but the air was cold and humid that added to the effect of the steam from  the 4014.

Photo #2- The train continued across the fill that crossed the country road that leads south from i-70.

Photo #3- I moved west to Byers where I caught the train as it crossed the west switch of Byers siding.

I have a couple more shots in Part 2.

Photo #4- The train continued west across the switch at West Byers.

Photo #5- The train had had a scheduled stop in Strassburg and he finally pulled out of town. The cold moist air certainly made it easy to follow the progress of the train as it progressed. My last shot was on the sweeping curve west of Strassburg as it climbed the ridge between Strassburg and Bennet. The clouds from the approaching storm were advancing so I gave up fighting the crowds and headed back to Denver in bumper to bumper traffic.... Thanks for looking and have a great Thanksgiving!

Very nice results of the chase. The colder weather sure made this event a nice one for photographs.

It's amazing how big modern diesels are compared to the BIG BOY.  The BIG BOY is big, but that diesel is big, too!

Very nice series.  Yes the cold was very conducive to steam!  Wish I could be out today, even better with snow in the air and on the ground.
