Beautiful stuff.I saw one of those VeraSun Energy hoppers on the LaPlata webcam just last evening.

From 1952 through the early 80's when I played close attention to railroad cars I don't remember ever seeing a car as rusted as that hopper .  Maybe it was because paint was better back then or maybe railroads took better care of the cars.  I remember seeing plenty that had been repainted.

Railroads used to repaint equipment every 5 to 10 years back then.
Now days a 20 year old paint job is pretty common.

Here we have consecutive cars in the same train showing different levels of weathering.
First is SHPX 450093 followed by SHPX 450464 on a UP train on the Indiana Harbor Belt in La Grange IL

Wow! Great thread. I'm always looking for good weathering examples -- especially since I started doing some more modern rolling stock.
Here's a recent effort in N scale.
