Maybe it was because paint was better back then or maybe railroads took better care of the cars. I remember seeing plenty that had been repainted.

Railroads used to repaint equipment every 5 to 10 years back then. Now days a 20 year old paint job is pretty common. I'm always looking for good weathering examples -- especially since I started doing some more modern rolling stock.
