UP Boy Scout Unit Blanked
Author: JLW2K

Can anyone provide details on why the boy scout unit has been cleared of all BSA artwork?  Will it return to the same scheme or just become a regular unit again?

That locomotive has been looking like that for a long time now

Well I guess I'm late on receiving that info.  Oh well.

Here it is two weeks ago in Mojave. Even has a little graffiti on it.

Yup. Considering those decals are very nearly 10 years old now (and affixed to a GE lets remember) it is amazing they are still as 'intact' as they are. I seriously doubt UP will 'spruce' up the 2010 the way they did the 7400 a few years ago. UP 2010 was delivered as the 7469, might return to its original identity one day.

It has looked pretty ragged the last year.  However, just 3 days ago it went to NLR dead and is scheduled for an overhaul---will be interesting to see if it comes out repainted and in what format---UP or BSA.

I guess what's confusing is UP has kept up all the other modern paint schemes in recent years all the way back to the 2001/2002 Olympic Torch units.  I wonder if there was some sort of falling out or request to remove the BSA branding.  Who knows....

The BSA thing has become somewhat toxic, case in poiint, the LDS church their long time supporter has cancelled all ties with the BSA.

I just read a Facebook post claiming that the U. P. Is removing all special painted heritage schemes and using the 2010 as an example. I doubt the claim is very credible but with constant change with the U. P. I wouldn't put it past them.

And why would they do that when they just did repaints on those locos..??!! Certain paints are not cheap....

Anything is possible....

Looks to me the decals just didn't hold up rather than an attempt to "get rid of the graphics".  Either way it's looking pretty worn out, a bit like the organization itself perhaps.

Yes, the decals have worn off over the years of natural forces having their effect on them.
Will they replace them? That's up to the railroad when it gets a major shopping and repainted.

Toxic indeed.  Another case in point, the decision made by the BSA bigwigs to allow the opposite sex to become Eagle Scouts has greatly diminished (to a lot of boys) the real meaning/purpose of BOY Scouts of America.

Seems that the repaints happened before the slash and burn UP 2020 Plan...different priorities at different times.

This reply is really the best answer I see here as to "why" the Boy Scout unit looks as it does - the merits, or lack thereof, of the Boy Scouts as an organization couldn't be more irrelevant to the question originally asked about the current appearance of the Boy Scout unit at UP. You have to remember, the heritage units and Olympic units were repainted several years ago, before UP's 2020 Plan of  "cut everything in sight and if the RR is still semi-functional and our stock price continues to climb, we clearly can go ahead and cut some more."

As for the other heritage units getting repainted, sounds like another "I saw it on the Internet so it must be true" comment. Having said that, morale couldn't be lower at that company right now and management doesn't care, so their incentive to show pride in their company with specially painted units is likely non-existent at this point. Of course I have always felt that the heritage units were painted due to trademark laws, but regardless of that personal belief, priorities have certainly shifted at UP, so honestly, who knows what will happen.

Its a sad day for the Boy Scouts now that its not just for boys that is a big problem to deal with if you are a Scout Master I think they are called.  The LDS church has long been there for the Scouts running programs in most churches but now in OR you can be gender neutral ever what that is.

As others have posted above, the Scotchlite decals on this unit are over 10 years old.
They were probably due for replacement a couple of years ago.
The only question now is will the UP go to the expense to recreate those decals or just put the standard paint scheme on it.

It looked quite nice on May 14, 2010, when it was on its first run west, on the point of a westbound hotshot, here curving toward Sherman, WY. === === = === JLH
