Ho-hum, just another day in Eugene. Lots of homeless, druggies, and other people in that area so that's not a surprise. In fact it could have easily been a suicide. 

I had one lady sit down on the rails in front of me one night wanting to commit suicide at this very crossing. I simply pulled up to her, stopped, and got off to talk with her. She asked me to hit her and I explained that wasn't happening. We had the dispatcher shut the mainline down (I was on a yard lead) and eventually the police and medical people arrived to escort her to her new lodgings for the night.

I am being somewhat facetious when I say this, but it is almost to the point where we need a separate forum for the "trespasser/pedestrian strike of the day."

See somebody messed-up on the tracks in Eugene?  Call CAHOOTS 541-682-5111.  They'll probably get there before the police.

I don't think he meant it that way. CAHOOTS is a service that is specifically geared for people "in crisis" - drug issues, mental issues, suicide issues, etc. They are also based about 1 block from where this happened. Even when the police do show up, and they aren't really geared for these kinds of issues, they'll call CAHOOTS anyway. The downside is there are only a few CAHOOTS crews so they're not always available. 

As a note, the Eugene Police Department themselves admit they do not show up for many, perhaps even most, calls. If it's a "life or death" situation, or some other higher intensity issue, they'll show for those but "minor" issues they just ignore. This incident probably would have gotten them to come out though, and in fact did get them to come out.
