December 28, 2018 marked a very sad day for railfans along Union Pacific's Coast & Santa Barbara Subdivsions as the OWPDO and ODOWP (Coast Cans) were to be abolished due to the ex-espee cars reaching their age limit. 

I chased the train from Santa Margarita down to Orcutt RD in SLO where the train was tied down for the night before continuing south to Long Beach

For those not on the know, what was the purpose of the power move being conducted at the end of the video? We’re those manned helpers that then handed off a unit to the headend, or...?

Yes, the helpers are manned over Cuesta then removed just north of the SLO station.

4214 the south facing SD70M refused to start so they sent it along with the train

Very nice, end of an era. One horn happy hogger on the single unit and nice of that crew man to walk right in front of the camera.

Willing to bet that the engineer decided that if he was being videoed he was going to make real sure to follow all the rules.

So what happened to the cars? Were they scrapped?

Was it an optical illusion on my part...but, didn't that "conductor" flip off the AMTRAK folks??

That's about all you can do with them. They're past their mandatory retirement date.

That seems unlikely. If I remember correctly the trains started in 1983. Unless the cars were built in 1970 or earlier they have not reached their age limit. My guess is they will be scrapped since nobody these days appears to like the TankTrain concept.

Thanks for the videoes. However, SP never owned or leased the cars.
