Slim Pickin’s Sunday - maybe with a Z?
Author: bmarti7

Sundays are regular work days for me. But with our live church services shutdown, I had the opportunity to get out on a beautiful day after our online worship service aired. I found a string of UPS trailers and containers parked at Lyons, the first siding west of Mandan on the BNSF Dickinson Sub. As I was shooting photo 1, the Mandan Yardmaster called the BNSF 7279 East "signal indication" into town.

I headed back to the first Lyons Road crossing. After getting shots there, I wanted to jump ahead and shoot the train before entering the terminal as there was perfect lighting. Alas I ran into a North Dakota "speed bump", but the train was crawling as well because the fueling track wasn't quite available.

What about the "Z"? Although we have had a few detours through here when there was a problem on the HiLine (most detouring Z's go via MRL/Alliance/Lincoln), it was not so today. However we did get something different than the usual C, E, X, U & G's. The 7279 was leading the B-SPOCHC. Have a blessed Sunday and stay safe.

1. Look what I found at Lyons
2. Pulling eastward, the 7279 passes through some of North Dakota's "flatlands"
3. Approaching first Lyons Road crossing

4. Speed bump @ 20 mph on business I-94
5. Approaching West Mandan
6. Entering the terminal as the dimmed light of the BNSF 5742 pushes the C-BTMALM out of town east. The background is the bluffs of the Missouri River on the Bismarck side. The blue water tower is about six blocks from my house.

Looks like you had a fun Sunday Bill. I like the reflection of the train on your car hood in your video.

Very cool there Bill.  Those UPS Trailers on flatcars  are slowly going the way of the Do Do  bird.  Great catch.
Love the "Speed Bump"  Only in North Dakota???!!!

Keep them coming whne you can get out for exercise!!.

Interesting series, thanks for posting.  If this train had a  "B" synbol, those trailers had to be empty.  And I liked the three CRST trailers up front.  The Cedar Rapids based company doees not use intermodal that much but occasionally you will see one of their trailers on a train,  Three, especially empties, is unusual.

Thanks for the note.Yes sir - all empty containers and trailers with a few empty spine cars tacked on the end. Interestingly, we had a "B" train through here early this morning: (0600) with 72 empty well cars. B-CHCSEA
