SMART construction resumes on Windsor extension on the NWP.
Author: weather

With COVID 19 regulations easing, SMART contractor Stacey-Witebeck is back to work on the 3 mile Windsor extension expected to be open in late 2021.  Work began just after the first of the year then halted in March. Most of the work so far invloved ripping up the legacy manline whikch was composed of re-laid 132 lb. CWR. Preparation of the roadbed is now in progress.   The platform with guantlet tracks will be built a few yeards north of  the "new" station built in the anticipation of SMART service.  The ROW is wide enough for D.T. and over a mile and a half will be constructed between Airport Blvd. and Windsor.

Image four: shows the PTC/CTC block signal that controls movements south from this point at the ROC Center.   Image 5:  this s the approach signal looking south towards the  PTC/CTC block at Airport Blvd. The building is part of the Pritt Industrial Park.  The switch into the Park was removed by the contractor and there is a fight with SMART to have it restored per a previous agreement. .The final image looks north and shows the over one-mile gap that will be constructed to rejoin the legacy mainline south of Healdsburg. Plan is for SMART to go as far north as Cloverdale, CA, with an intermediate stop in Healdsburg, CA

However, I believe they currently only have funding to get to Windsor, CA

I'll be demo'ing 4 old NWP railroad bridges on this project. It's kind of neat working along the old right of way. Demo is scheduled for 7.8.20 if you guys care.

Are the signals on the trackless roadbed left over from when the rail was in and trains were moving or were they installed as the first step in the SMART extension?  I suspect the first, but it's interesting to see them all lit up with nowhere to go.

SMART had previously rebuilt the track right up to the Airport Blvd road crossing. The signals pictured in this thread are the end of the signal system there at Airport Blvd plus the distant signal for it north of that location. Check out the view at the Google Maps Street View and you will see an earlier view with the legacy track still present north of Airport Blvd. That legacy track is what has been recently removed, but the signals still remain. I imagine the control point there at Airport Blvd will remain as is, but likely there will be signal changes north of that location to the station at Windsor.

They were installed prior to the extension work, when the original trackage was in place. Now that the rails/ties have been removed in preparation for new track they remain in place (the "distant" signal will probably be removed later).

All that relay 132 lb. CWR---will it be re-laid to save money?  Still usable?  SMART trains are light on the rail.

Here's one of the last freight moves over the tracks in Windsor on April 19. NWP was spotting a couple centerbeams of ties. Contractor equipment was on the north end of the siding so they needed the two engines to spot the loads. Tied down the power on the Standard Structures spur. End of an era for the tracks here.

I believe the siding was at one time a loadout for Kaiser Sand & Gravel. Anyone know?
