Anyone heard if the Milson-Coors to Pabst sale is going through?

On May 4th Pabst announced they were exercising their option to purchase the brewery and that the transaction should be completed by the end of the year.  Pabst wouldn't be producing the same volume that Coors did, so some employees will either be laid off or transferred.  They also mentioned that some the adjacent vacant land might be sold to off-set the sale.

If Pabst is going to producing the same volume then why would employees be laid off?

Pabst would most likely only be brewing their own brand there, nothing for Miller-Coors (ie Coors Light and Miller Lite and MGD), so the resulting Pabst volumne won't match what Miller was doing with all the brands they were making.

         Automation may contribute to layoffs, normal these days. The 'same volume' does NOT equate to keeping the same employees also because the current volume produced could be 'too low' to keep every single employee. Simple math and business by the ledger sheet.

That brewery is already automated. The answer would be the reduced volumes from only brewing Pabst brands.

Sorta doesn't seem right, always thought of Pabst as a major Midwestern brand, but hey, whatever workls!

I apologize, my initial post should have read that Pabst wasn't going to be producing the same volume.  I have corrected my original post and I apologize for any misunderstanding I may have caused.

I too am glad that the brewery is staying open.  I feel for those that will be losing their jobs but thankfully that will only be limited to a few employees instead of everyone.

Employee loss and rail volume loss, could have been much worse.

Thanks for the clarification. I worked for Coors in the late 1990s when all this consolidation was going on and I am glad at least some of the folks at Irwindale will still be employed. I did most of the long-term strategic planning about building new breweries or buying existing ones or merging and the whole beer manufacturer landscape has radically changed since the 1990s. One summer I toured every single "industrial" sized brewery that might be bought or merged and it was amazing how different companies took care of their physical plants, or more accurately, how they didn't. At that time we didn't buy anything because they were so abysmal in terms of quality control and safety. I was impressed by Irwindale because at that time Coors, Miller and AB were at the same level of quality control and safety standards.

Total volume may not be that much lower considering Pabst owns the rights to about 50 labels.  These include Olympia, Lone Star, Pearl, Strohs, Stag, etc.

Anyone remember the name of the brewery across the freeway from LAUPT? We did work for them, can't remember corporate name.

Brew 102!

Exactly but the corporate name was like Springfield Brewing or some such. My guys would come back with a couple cases of beer,
talked about the employees being able to drink on breaks. Long way from today! Anyway, they used to brew all the local store brands
plus of course Brew 102 (big sign next to the freeway).

Brew 102, beer so bad even us high school kids wouldn't drink it!

Blast from the past. I vaguely remember the "Brew 102" brand, but never sampled any. In line with all the "brew brands" that are listed elsewhere, I remember my late father and his choices in brews. His choice (as I remember) was "Burgie" (or "Burgermeister" if memory serves). He then switched to "Olympia" when it was originally brewed in Tumwater, Washington. Our family "toured" the Tumwater facility many years ago.  Speaking of which, I see that Olympia is a secondary brand by Pabst - hope they'll market it in California once again. Today, I am a Coors Light person, but I do have a case of P.B.R. in the fridge just for a change.

You'd come up the Interstate abd see the Oly brewery with three big pipes leading down into this awful looking black
lagoon. Always wondered (laughing) if that was the intake for the brewing water. The other "el cheapo" was Blitz
Weinhard, just slightly less expensive than bottled water.

When I was a "Kid" growing up in Oregon, my Dad drove bus for Greyhound and did a lot of charter work. One big deal was to stop by the Olympia brewery with a bus load of tourists for a 'refreshment stop'.  It was always very popular with the groups and was a good public relations move for the brewer.  The really interesting note is that the brewery is in Tumwater, (Olympia Wa.) about 111mi from Portland, but before Dad could get home with the tour group, a case of Olympia beer would mysteriously appear on our doorstep in Portland.  He never asked for it and they never offered it, it just always happened to appear.  So, yes Virginia there is an Easter Bunny and he lives in Tumwater Washington, or at least he did in the 60's.
