That’s one way to add AC to a locomotive.
Author: howeld

Ex NS GP38 at Shattuck, OK grain elevator.

Concrete ties make cheap ballast.

Wow, you speak in riddles so early in the morning?
(The above means that I have NO clue what you are talking about!!)

At least for the title, someone has installed an air conditioning unit in the middle cab windshield, not that they converted it to alternating power which is what I thought the title was going to refer to. As for the concrete ties thing, who knows?

The concrete ties are weight, ballast for the slug.

Anyone know what the locos NS number was?

Lots of worn out concrete ties are crushed and the contents are reused.

Considering that it is lettered 2810 in the NS fount style and Southern Railway had a GP 38 numbered 2910, I suspect the NS number was 2810.

I suspect you are correct. But 2810 was a high hood equipped with dynamic brakes on NS. Looking closer at the picture it appears to have been modified heavily after. The number boards and headlight look suspiciously like GE numberboards.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the pictures?

I still think people do this on purpose.

Done all the time here in Chile,  but for clearance reasons. The highest point on the unit is the cab roof.   The loco is an SD39M-2,  built by NRE Dixmoor from the hulk of B&O 3749/CSX 6525.

Back a few years when I was railroading in Kanasa the K&O Railroad leased a unit to a local ready mix plant for their switching, Because of the heat, humidity, dust and dirt in the palnt the leasor figured out a simple, way to add air conditioning to the cab of the locomotive. They placed a residential, window, air conditioner in the conductor's side window and chained down a diesel generator to the cab roof to supply power. Luckily, they didn't have any side or top clearance issues and it worked perfectly.

Back in the early 90's, someone mounted a swamp cooler in the same spot (middle windshield), on an SP engine...

MPRX 2810 also has the number board assembly from a C39-8.  Very odd.

I think it was Norfolk Southern that said concrete ties were an expensive way to buy rip rap.  BSB
