Western Railroad Discussion > Union Pacific using Trackage Rights on the BNSF Ft Madison IowaDate: 08/07/20 10:47 Union Pacific using Trackage Rights on the BNSF Ft Madison Iowa Author: tq-07fan Two weeks ago July 23 2020 I caught this Union Pacific double stack crossing the double deck Fort Madison Swing Bridge in the background above Old Fort Madison on the right, the downtown Ft Madison ATSF station is on the left. I did not know that UP had trackage rights through here until I saw the train and looked it up today. So how many Union Pacific trains run through Ft Madison on the trackage rights and why? This was only my second time in Ft Madison. I drove there to ride Amtrak to Galesburg and back and took this afterwards.

Depends on the day of the week. Recently UP ran 7 trains in 24 hours past the La Plata cam, 4 east and 3 west. It was one of the conditions attached to the merger of Santa Fe and BN in 1996.

It was like the old times, hang out at a track and be confused by what shows up. Unlike the old times though we can ask here instead of making up something at the slide show.
