A somewhat unusual overhead sign.  I imagine the story behind it isn't good...

This is the only one I’ve seen, and it’s only on this side of the crossing.
SR

I’ve not been out to the Hazen crossing.

The NB US 95 crossing at Ocala, NV (where the truck/Amtrak collision occurred) has one of these flashing approach warnings as well...

Hwy58 between Boron and Barstow has a similar setup.

Great News, it no longer exists!

The Kramer Jct. Bypass opened earlier this year, and the new crossing near Jimgrey, is a bridge...

Perhaps it is to warn the truck drivers who miss the 11' 8" bridges.

I have ridden the head end through fog/low clouds near there.  Once.

I believe this particular set of flashing yellow lights was just installed in the past few months.  It also appears they have added cantilever lights at the crossing itself sometime recently.  They weren't there some years back.

Also for those looking on the map for this crossing, its actually on Nevada Highway 233, it becomes Utah Highway 30 once it crosses the border a little east of here.

I was last in Montello about 4yrs ago, and I thought the overhead flashers were there then- so I checked it out using the Google Earth time thingie.  The 2013 view shows it was there then, so I remembered it right.  The STREET VIEW was done in 2009, and it's not there.  So it went up between '09 and '13.   The wreck of the Zephyr at US 95 was in 2011, so this type sign in Nevada could very likely be related.

You are, of course, right about the changing highway numbers at the NV/UT state line.

Do the advanced warning lights activate when the crossing signals turn on, or do they activate some seconds before?

These type of warnings are usually installed in locations where the highway is higher speed (40-45 and above) and the crossing is otherwise not near any other highway signal restriction.

Think of it as an advanced approach.

I waited on the train to take this and I'm pretty sure everything lit at once.

It's 12'4" now, they raised it 8 inches. And the idiots still hit it!

I felt like it was just a couple of years ago that I was out that way but after checking it has been over 10 years now.  Wow.  Where does the time go.

There is one on Hwy 36 at St. John, UT on the Lynndyl Sub and one on Hwy 132 just west of Parley, UT on the Sharp Sub.

Wouldn't the old highway still be there (as Twenty Mule Team Road)?  It seems to have been left in place to the west of Kramer, paralleling the bypass.  I'd guess it would still be needed for local access.
The crossing in question is/was directly at Kramer, where 58 scissored across to the north side of the BNSF, correct?

I thought Kramer Jct. was the US395 crossing on the BNSF at Hwy 58(old US466).
