Long Trains Runnin' (at Shawmut AZ)...
Author: ACR_Ted

I finally got out yesterday (Thursday) for some railfanning for the first time since last April...way too long to go without seeing some trains.
Just about every train I saw was a really long monster with one or two sets of DPUs.
Some photos:

1st is a westbound just west of Mobile.
2nd is the mid train DPU.
3rd is an eastbound at Shawmut.

4th photo: the DPUs for the preceding train
5th photo: An eastbound manifest with only 1 unit on the point
6th photo: Mid train DPUs - this is the first SD70AH I've seen.

7th photo: The tail end DPU for the preceding train...1x2x1 and a lot of cars.
8th photo: An eastbound military train right at sunset. A small camera mounted flash lights up the stripes on the loco.
9th photo: A westbound about 1/2 hour after sunset...again with a camera mounted flash to light up the stripes.

Nothing special...but it sure was good to get out of town and see some trains!

Thanks for looking....

Ted

Are the DPU's kept in sync with the lead units throught computer in the locomotives? How is that done? Are there antennas on the locomotives to receive signals to and from eachother? How do they work together between the GE's and the EMD's?

Neat area. I like the low-light shot #7.

That 1X2X1 manifest sure looked like two 1X1s pasted together, where they might split EB or join WB at Santa Teresa or somewhere else around El Paso.

I bet some folks here could answer that definitively based on the loco numbers nicely captured.

Yes the system works well most of the time regardless if there is an EMD or GE in the lead or as the helper controlling unit. Most of the time sync is used but the engineer can separate the units by putting up the fence. For example the head end can be in dynamic and the helper in power to help regulate the speed and train handling.
