How different from the early 1970's, then usually a couple of Geeps and using the "sheephook" to turn the angle cocks toward the west end of Muir and cutting  off on the fly. When the round house was really short of power you got what was running, I remember once being on a helper trip with a single GE, an old BN 5600 series, shoving behind the caboose at West End.  Ground relayed out and died, slack came out with a crack and train miraculously stayed in one piece and inched over the top.  After that, there was at least one Geep along if you had a GE to drag it to the house when you got back to Livingston.   C&S 891,  another old GE cull that always seemed to be around in helper service rode so rough over switches it wanted to throw you out of the chair above 25 mph.  The BN 5600 series were (not so) "affectionately" called Maytags by the old heads, cab freezing cold and drafty in the winter, rough riding and rattled and shook, but shoved well when they ran.
