Western Railroad Discussion > Mega train leaving Pasco, WA in a hurry

An eastbound double grain empty leaving Glade just east of Pasco, WA on the ex-NP Friday afternoon 3-26-21 after meeting a westbound stack train.  Curious to know if the lead three units are in dynamic braking or under power, does not sound right as they pass.  The train certainly does pick up speed afterwards.  Took just a little more than 4 minutes for the train of 232 or so cars to pass.  That is getting up and going!  I spotted two BN green cars plus on GN Heritage hopper on this train.  Thanks for watching!

Nice catch of the Fast moving Mega train Brian! That train had some getty-up and go!

Brian,

Without knowing the lay of the land, I'd say that the engineer was laying back on the power when the headend went by you because part of the train was still in the siding and limited in speed through the diverging turnout. Once the whole train was out, he definintely went to Run 8 as testified by the full wail from the DPU's!

Loved the video! 3+ Horsepower per ton (assuming all the units were powered) on the moderate grade leaving Glade eastbound (varying but around 0.4%) allows for pretty good acceleration.

Am guessing the tonnage must be in the proximity of30,000 tons. 232 x 130 tons per car equals 30,160 tons.. Talk about a semi controlled runaway ! Plus many flat spots!

Glade is on the east end of the double Mains from Pasco East. I believe they have to hurry up and get moving as the tail end would still be blocking a crossing about 2-miles away from the signal. From here there the mega trains get the priority as there are no sidings longe enough until they get to double track between Hatton and Lind.

Surprised that with the emptys would have the 2 sets of remotes..
